This oil painting is a reminder of my numerous visits at the Edinburgh city centre when we were making our way to festival venues.

While COVID and the resulting lockdown was a source of anguish, I observed a new zeal in the hills and woods – kids flying kites, bikes whizzing past, families walking, jogging and enjoying picnics – a pleasant escape from isolation.

I was inspired when I met a small tree on Pentland hills that was shining brighter and inspiring others – including me.

The tree at the Pentland hills is inspired by the legendary story of the Thomas the Rhymer who met the Queen of the Fairies.

Scottish oak and juniper interspersed with my memories of the banyan tree inspired this image. The peaceful shade with the Firth of Forth in the background is unquestionably from Edinburgh.

Pentland woods - home to birds and squirrels where - the sun streams through creating a speckled curtain of light. The birds singing at the top of their voice is a welcome sound of tranquillity, peace and harmony.
